The Outlander by Gill Adamson – here
I really enjoyed this. Adventure at the turn of the 20th Century in the badlands of Canada.
A Year in the Merde by Stephen Clarke – here
A snide look at the french by an uppity brit (quite funny though)
Fried Green Tomatos at the Whistle Stop Cafe (again) by Fannie Flagg – here
Is this book ever not good? Read it twice now and seen the movie.
The Hotel New Hamshire by John Irving – here
Excellent, cannot recommend this book enough. Wacky, amusing, insightful, magnetic. Book of the trip so far.
The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown – here
Dont bother
The Beach by Alex Garland – here
No introduction needed I am sure. I swapped the Outlander for this well thumbed copy of the travellers playbook
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini - here
40 years following 2 women in Afghanistan, through the brutality of various regimes. So sad but very good.
Down Under by Bill Bryson – here
Bill doing his usual wry commentary, this time obsessed with the number of ways nature can kill you in Australia.
Shakespeare by Bill Bryson – here
A very quick run through the accepted truths and myths of Shakespeare life.
The Pol Pot Regime 1975-1979 by Ben Kiernan – here
Ghost Train to the Eastern Star by Paul Theroux – here

Dude, if you get a chance, look out for ‘D-Day’ by Antony Beever. It’s an amazing piece, in that he single-handedly changes the way military history is written. Gets right into it, humanifies the stories being told (if that’s the correct adjective…). Can’t reccommend it enough.

When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris is hysterical. Its short stories that are laugh out loud funny and would be perfect for the intermittent dozing/wakefulness that long bus journeys bring on. Do you have a Kindle or are you reliant on picking up books left behind in hostels? Give Elaine a big hug!
